Extra Mile is building and funds a free school in the Ober Funkia village, Sierra Leone, for children whose parents cannot afford education. Bringing Words to Life (BWtL) is a literacy charity, founded by a journalist and author. After a lengthy pilot study in a primary school, the engagement of the children through this alternative platform encouraged the development of BWtL. The intention is to engage as many young people as possible with the processes, skills, and attitudes they need to enhance their literacy.

We sponsor very bright primary school children living in slums. We pay for school fees, books, uniforms and basic essentials to enable them to attend top secondary schools. We select top secondary schools based on their past results and the number of students from the school who have qualified for university.

We run training programmes in oral history techniques, run a website, publish a journal, run a regional network, offer advice, run an annual conference, act as a focal point for oral history and deal with ethical issues, archiving and technical developments for dissemination.
