The aim of the Caitlin's Kickstart Award is to give financial help to deserving students in their first year of higher education and in any discipline. The present award is a gift of ?1,000 per recipient.

The charity makes awards to students, under 25 years of age, resident in or in the neighbourhood of Blackburn, who are entering university or other institutions of higher education for degree courses. Candidates must be nominated by the head teacher or principal of the college attended and will be selected using set criteria: academic excellence, career ambitions and financial need.

It makes grants or loans to secure the publication of information relating to York's history and promotes public lectures. It holds an essay competition and offers a university history prize.
