The society was founded in 1963 to promote interest in the life and work of Sir Nigel Gresley. Meetings are held in the spring and autumn, at various locations, when there are talks by well known speakers. We offer training programmes & coaching based on emotional literacy with a focus on behaviour strategies and curriculum development. Work is based in; primary, secondary, supplementary schools, after-school locations, community centres, training centres.

Our wraparound service supports the entire community. Our community hub serves hot meals, drinks and take-away food along with showers. We run a food bank, baby bank, clothing bank and pet food bank. All of our services are non-referral .We run regular sessions to support young families with literacy and cooking events, and have regular advisors supporting our clients varied needs.

We give grants to adults taking part-time education courses in the arts and humanities in the North-East of England. Grants can be for fees, transport, books and materials, or other expenses such as child care.

We mainly work within the Chorley, Lancashire area and provide support to Churches and other organisations. We are a Christian charity and support the work of local hospices and other caring charities. We sell Christian literature, CDs, DVDs, cards, music, etc. including church and school supplies. We carry a large stock. The shop was extended during 2011.

Sleep Apnoea Trust works to improve the lives of sleep apnoea patients, their partners and families, by providing advice and assistance through telephone helplines, newsletters, publications, a website, medical alert cards, and an annual conference. We also campaign for the provision of better services by the NHS, and contribute towards relevant research projects.

The society organises a programme of lectures, field trips and fieldwork. It publishes Durham Archaeological Journal and a series of research reports, and promotes the protection and appreciation of the historic environment.
