We educate the public in the area of the North Pennines in the history of mineral extraction and work to preserve, protect, and develop sites of historical interest connected with the industry and in particular, and for the public benefit, co-operate with and assist Durham County Council in the preservation, protection and development and improvement of the museum at Killhope.

Our activities are very much community based. A small fishing village, with an industrial history of ironstone mining, and steel works, only a small specialised part of the steelworks remaining (steel brought in by road/rail, from Teesside). High number of unemployed/retired in an area of social deprivation. A good and tight knit community, the village hall provides for the needs of the community

Regular safeguarding and exhibitions of local historical interest

The charity holds regular meetings throughout England and Wales and sends a three yearly newsletter to members. A new website has recently been set up to include talks from many of our speakers.

THE OBJECTS OF THE ACADEMY ARE TO ADVANCE THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC IN THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL HISTORY OF TOBACCO AND PIPE SMOKING WORLDWIDE. IT HAS A WORLDWIDE MEMBERSHIP AND ORGANISES CONFERENCES IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY EACH YEAR. IT PUBLISHES AN ANNUAL JOURNAL WHICH IS SUBJECT TO ACADEMIC PEER REVIEW AND CARRIES OUT RESEARCH THROUGH SPECIALIST WORKING GROUPS.

The greater promotion of historical knowledge and the greater understanding of history among members of the public by means of the re-enactment of both daily life and particular occurrences in suitable settings, to the highest possible standards of contemporary accuracy.

Conduct talks and visits about local history and assist in research into the history of Bishop's Stortford

Hold monthly lectures on subjects relating to local history. Arrange at least 2 evening outings and 1 day trip per annum. Produce publications on local history. Occasional open lecture with well known speaker.

The BES promotes the study of inscriptions, texts, and historical documents in Greek, Latin, and other languages in the British Isles. We hold seminar meetings twice yearly on epigraphic themes, and regularly organise workshops on the practical study of inscriptions. We keep in touch via newsletters and e-mail alerts, and offer bursaries to student members to attend epigraphic meetings, etc.

Our primary purpose is to preserve and maintain the historic grade 1 listed building, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag in Abbey Road, Knaresborough (and its surrounding land), for public benefit. We welcome visitors by regular opening during the summer months, facilitating all year round pilgrimage and prayer, and teaching visiting groups about the history and heritage of the chapel.
