Holds meetings. Co-operates with local authorities , planning committees, and all other statutory authorities, voluntary organisations and charities. Holds fund raising events. Helps to promote civic pride in the local area and to generate public interest in and care for its beauty, history and character.

To assist the Police, Crime Reduction Officers, Community Safety Team Harlow Council and other agencies in the prevention and detection of crime. To advice and assist members of the public with appropriate advice and support to safeguard their homes and other property and personal belongings. To promote good citizenship and greater public participation in the reduction of crime.

To help police,fire,search and rescue,lifeboat,civil defence,military and/or other emergency services and to acquire relevant and externally recognised skills .To provide financial and other assistance to aged and infirm members in need and to their wives, widows and children.To teach young members between the ages of 14 and 18 the principles of discipline, loyalty, service and good citizenship .

Main purpose of WI are to enable women to advance their education in citizenship, in public questions, national & international. In music, drama & all issues connected with rural life. It seeks to give women the opportunity of working together through the WI organisation, and of putting into practice those ideals for which it stands.

Bitterne WI enables women to extend their interest in crafts. history,citizenship,music and drama. It provides a meeting place for women to socialise and to work to improve their community.As part of the wider organisation of WIs it takes part in aiming to influence national issues especially those affecting women and family life.

We work in Greater London with young people 5-25 to:stage inclusive community Talent Shows;organise workshops that promote confident self-presentation and leadership skills;link them to developmental experiences in fields such as arts, business, community activism and other disciplines that advance their future capacities for personal/professional growth, as well as civic engagement.

The WI offers opportunities for all women to enjoy friendship, to learn, to widen their horizons. It aims to improve and develop the quality of life, particularly in rural areas, for women and their families.
