It is the trustees' policy to give priority to appeals from charitable organisations based within a radius of 25 miles of the centre of Bristol in the following spheres:- Assistance to the disabled, with the priority being disabled children;- Assistance to those suffering from illness or disease; and- Medical research and welfare in the above areas.

The objects of the Society are, within the County of Hampshire: i) To advance the education of the public in all aspects of ornithology. ii) To promote research into ornithology and to publish the useful results of such study.iii) To support and encourage the preservation and conservation of wild birds and places of ornithological interest.

The Society seeks to advance public education by furthering the study of Italy and Italian language and culture through its publications (the journal Italian Studies), conferences (a biennial residential conference, a smaller, themed event in alternate years, an annual postgraduate colloquium), research fund, student bursaries, and financial support for events organized by members of the Society.
