How It Works
Charity Finder mirrors the official Charity Commission register and adds context — derived financial metrics, sector aggregates, and curated hubs — so it's easier to compare and understand UK charities.
Where the data comes from
All charity records on this site come from the Charity Commission for England and Wales, published under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
The full register and the methodology behind every derived field is documented on the Data Sources page.
Weekly refresh
The Charity Commission publishes the register as a fresh snapshot each week. We ingest that snapshot into our own database, validate the records, and re-publish the site. The gap between Commission publication and what you see here is typically under 24 hours.
Filings themselves lag the charity's financial year-end by months, so the most recent accounts you see may be 12–18 months behind real time. This is a Commission limitation, not a Charity Finder one.
Derived metrics
We compute a handful of efficiency ratios from each charity's annual return — Program Ratio, Administrative Ratio, and Overall Efficiency — so you don't have to do the arithmetic yourself.
Each metric has a defined formula and known caveats. Read the full methodology before relying on these for grant-making, journalism, or due-diligence work.

Data corrections, missing fields, or something that looks wrong — get in touch. We can't change Commission records directly, but we can fix presentation issues on this site and flag genuine register errors to the Commission.
