The society was founded in 1982 to promote friendship between the UK and the republics of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Belize. It organises lectures, social events, and fundraising events in collaboration with the embassies and sometimes with other charities. It also has a programme of small donations for charitable projects in the region.

Eat United builds local solutions to food insecurity and food waste through the development of a volunteer-led food re-distribution system in Nicaragua.
