The original purpose of the charity was to house 18 poor, elderly woman of Hay-on-Wye or the surrounding district. During 1973/74 extensive alterations were made to provide more modern accommodation for 12 women. Since 2002, with the conversion of a flat formerly used as warden accommodation, 13 women have been accommodated.
