The Society's Royal Charter 1802 states the purpose as 'The Cultivation of the Science of Natural History in all its branches'. The primary aim of the Great Dixter Charitable Trust is to ensure the conservation of the Great Dixter estate and public access to the house and gardens as developed by the Lloyd family over the 20th and 21st centuries. Our programmes offer nationally recognised qualifications, enrichment activities and upskilling opportunities. Through land based engagement such as horticulture and conservation we help to unlock potential.

The current activities are to further public education in botany,horticulture and zoology and provide facilities for research. In addition the charity maintains and operates the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Glasshouses for the above purpose and for the recreation of the public.

A charity delivering Day Opportunities to People with Learning Disabilities in their local community and in our Country Centre setting incorporating Horticulture, Stables, Farm and Cafe. Those we support are able to connect with their peers and the animals we keep, grow their skills in a supported environment, whilst creating the opportunity for them to lead a more independent and fulfilled life.

Training

To provide training and work in horticulture,allied skills, arts and crafts for vulnerable adults including people with a learning disability and/or mental health problem. This by establishing special services at Northdale and ABLE providing work-based and social activities, and work experience in Hambleton & Richmondshire, The aim is to promote continuing education and sheltered/open employment.

Growing Space provides rehabilitation, sheltered training and work experience within the community for adults with or recovering from mental health problems. We offer two vocational training routes in horticulture and woodwork and also enable access to a work based learning programme, which includes IT training and personally tailored training in agreed key skill areas and confidence building.

Richmond AID runs services for disabled people including an Information Navigation and Advice Service, Money Advice, Benefits Service, Job Club, Peer Network, Spade gardening service and more.
